You wash your face, and five minutes later it feels a size too small. Your foundation clings to dry patches it never used to find. Your skin looks a little flat by mid-afternoon, even though you haven’t changed a thing.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. Hong Kong’s air genuinely gets drier from October, and a day spent moving between air-conditioned offices, malls and the MTR only adds to it. The good news: you don’t need a whole new routine. A few small tweaks usually make skin feel comfortable again.
It’s mostly the weather. According to the Hong Kong Observatory’s 1991–2020 climate normals, average relative humidity falls from 81% in August to 73% in October and 70% in December.
Afternoons are drier still. At 2pm, the average drops to 65% in October and November and 63% in December, compared with 74% in August.
Then there’s the air conditioning. Most of us still spend the day in cool, dry indoor air, so skin gets very little break.
The other culprit is habit. The light gel and oil-control products that felt perfect in July may simply not give your skin enough once the air turns crisp.
Picture the outermost layer of your skin as a brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and a mix of lipids (including ceramides and fatty acids) is the mortar holding them together.
When that wall is in good shape, it helps keep water in and everyday irritants out. When the mortar runs low, or you over-cleanse, skin tends to feel dry, rough and tight. That’s why autumn care is about topping up both water and lipids.
Tip: add one new product at a time, and patch test it behind your ear or on your inner wrist for a few days first.
All four are available at Miss Fabulous. Every detail below comes from the product pages.
Viscontour Serum Magnet 1ml x 30 comes as 30 single-use 1ml ampoules, so one box is roughly a month’s supply at one a day. The formula is built around panthenol (vitamin B5) and hyaluronic acid in several molecular sizes.
It’s free from alcohol, fragrance, dyes, mineral oil, silicones and preservatives. The product page lists it for all skin types, especially skin that feels dry or rough.
How to use: after cleansing, twist open an ampoule and pat it over your face and neck. You can use it around the eyes and lips too, but keep it out of the eyes themselves. Once it has absorbed, follow with your cream. Use each ampoule straight after opening and don’t keep leftovers.
Bielenda Skin Clinic Professional Ceramides Revitalizing Serum 30ml is made for dehydrated and dry skin. It pairs three ceramides (NP, AP and EOP) with beta-glucan and amino acids to help nourish the skin’s hydrolipid layer and ease that dry, rough feeling.
How to use: morning and evening, massage into clean skin on the face, neck and chest, avoiding the eye area. Wait about two minutes, then apply your cream. On very dry evenings, the brand suggests using a double amount.
Dermaviduals DMS Base Cream High Classic Plus 50ml is designed for dry, dehydrated, lipid-deficient and sensitive skin. The cream is built to closely mimic the natural structure of the skin barrier, with phosphatidylcholine, shea butter, ceramide, squalane and olive oil.
Despite the rich ingredient list, it’s lightweight and absorbs quickly without a greasy finish. It’s vegan, free from emulsifiers, fragrance, mineral oils and preservatives, and works on both face and body.
How to use: morning and evening, massage a small amount into clean skin until absorbed. Use it on its own, or mix in a serum. One heads-up from the product page: skin can feel slightly dry when you first switch to DMS creams, and this improves with continued use.
Shiny T-zone, tight cheeks? MIYA mySKINisotonic Light Hydration Cream with Electrolytes 40ml is the lighter option. It’s made for combination, oily and dehydrated skin, with electrolytes, ceramides, niacinamide, zinc PCA and squalane in a non-comedogenic formula.
It helps replenish moisture and keep oil in balance. The texture is light and non-sticky, and it dries down to a fresh matte finish. It does contain fragrance.
How to use: morning and evening, smooth over clean skin on the face, around the eyes, neck and décolleté, and massage gently until absorbed. It also works as a hydrating base under sunscreen or makeup.

Not necessarily. A thicker texture doesn’t automatically mean more moisture. What matters is covering both steps: adding water and sealing it in. Dry skin may enjoy a richer cream, while oily skin can stay light and add a hydrating serum underneath.
Serum first. As a rule, go from thinnest to thickest: watery serums, then richer serums, then cream. The Bielenda page, for example, suggests waiting about two minutes before your cream.
Yes. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, which is why it can look shiny and feel tight at the same time. A light, non-comedogenic cream such as MIYA mySKINisotonic is an easy fit.
It’s one of the questions we hear most. Both are Viscontour ampoule serums, but their formulas and focus differ. If hydration for dry or rough skin is your main goal, Serum Magnet, with panthenol and hyaluronic acid, is a good place to start. For a detailed comparison, check both product pages or message our customer service team.
None of these four products have been tested on pregnant women, so they aren’t labelled as suitable for pregnancy. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor first. For sensitive skin, patch test before use, and stop if you notice redness, stinging or discomfort.
Each product page shows whether an item is in stock or on pre-order, along with the expected shipping time.
Autumn skin doesn’t need a complete overhaul, just a little adjusting. Cleanse gently, hydrate first, nourish if you’re dry, and lock it all in with a cream that suits your skin type.
If your skin still feels uncomfortable after a few weeks, it’s worth checking in with a doctor or skincare professional.
